Motion

Overview

Motion at Balboa is easy, like a door on a spring. Things settle rather than snap. One curve and three timings cover everything on the website and the ordering screen: quick for small things, slow for big moments.

Principles

Three habits keep motion feeling like the cafe. Everything else here follows from them.

Curve

Our curve starts soft and lands softer. Use it for anything that moves, in place of a tool's default.

Signature — Ease in/out
cubic-bezier(0.2, 0, 0, 1)
Fast 150ms · Base 300ms · Slow 500ms
Fades take about half as long as the move they go with.

In use

The curve on the pieces every screen has: a button, a menu card, a cart sliding in.

Do and don’t

A few calls that come up on every screen.

Purpose
Do

Move a thing to show where it came from: the cart from the button, the menu from the tab.

Don’t

Animate to decorate. If it does not explain something, cut it.

Timing
Do

Quick for small things, slow for big moments, and never longer than half a second.

Don’t

Make anyone wait for an animation before they can order.

Comfort
Do

With reduced motion on, fade instead of move.

Don’t

Bounce, spin or shake anything bigger than a button.
